BASILICA

BASILICA

The abbey church was built in 1732 by the Cistercian monks from Heinrichau. For the construction they also used the ruins of the mediaeval buildings. It was consecrated in 1752.

The church’s beautiful high altar of national significance is the largest Baroque altar in Hungary. Our church is proud of its two paintings made by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, one of the most important painters of the era. The two church pipe organs are unique: the shrine organ accompanies the prayer of the monks, while the gallery’s German Romantic instrument is for the liturgy. Since the restoration completed in 2005, we can see the church interior in its original splendour. The basilica is not only a monument and tourist attraction: the church, awarded the title basilica minor in 1982, on the 800th anniversary of its founding, is the liturgical home of a living religious order and the parish church of Zirc.
