Zirc - a Bakony fővárosa

The Cistercian Abbey was built in several stages. Its construction began in 1727 and was ended in 1927. The architect was Atanáz Witwer Carmelite monk from Győr, who already was well-known for his architecture at that time. Due to the diligent work of the bricklayers from Vienna and Buda, the rectangular one-storey buildung was finished in 1733. Citing the words of the contemporary chronicler: Unfortunately, the stones of the medieval monastery were built in the new building.

Since 1989, the building complex is again fully owned by the Cistercian Abbey.
