CAVES

Doline in Csengő Hill: (Devil’ Hole.) The doline is located at the border of Bakonynána, in the northern part of Csengő Hill (Csengőhegy). It has a type of dachstein and is 13.5 m deep, sinking in an Early Jurassic limestone. (N:47°270’ E:17°992’)

Cseres doline: At the border of Cseszne, north of Imremajor, there is an Eocene cave sinking in a nummulitic limestone. It is only 2.4 deep, blocked by broken stones and is waiting for exploratory research. (N:47°309’ E:17°883’)

Csesznek Cave: The cave opens in the west foot of the Csesznek Castle Hill, at the south end of the Kőmosó canyon. Its low entrance leads into a wider cross gorge. On its wall facing the entrance there is a narrow, quite muddy passage leading up 8 m high to a pitch. (N:47°352’ E:17°877’)

Rocky caves of Kőmosó canyon in Csesznek They were formed on both sides of the glen south-east from Csesznek, on the boundary of the main dolomite and a limestone from the Eocene era. They are modestly sized. (N:47°350’ E:17°879’)

Csesznek rock den: The den is (Kecske Hole) at the southern end of the Kőmosó canyon, facing the Csesznek cave, about 17 m height. (N:47°351’ E:17°878’)

Rocky cave of Gaja canyon: Its entrance is in the north-eastern side of the Gaja canyon in Bodajk, about 460 m east of the former mill, about 30 m above the valley floor. (N:47°313’ E:18°217’)

Passage of Hódos brook: (Lyukaskő) at the border of Bakonyszentlászló, on the western edge of the valley of Hódos brook, in the forest of Szentlászló. The small Eocene limestone rising from the Miocene pebbles is pierced through a tubular corridor which divides into branches extending to stone chambers at both ends: Apart from point of interest, it may have scientific importance. (N:47°379’ E:17°835’)

Sinkhole of Kisszépalma: At the border of Porva, at the deepest point of the blue trail between Szépalma and Kisszépalma. Under leadership of L. Markó, the members of the cave research group in Veszprém have extended the gorges of the Jurassic limestone to a depth of 14 m in 1956. They have also noticed blast which would justify further research. (N:47°291’ E:17°783’)

Kőpince cave: (Cave of Jóska Savanyú.) It is located at the border of Bakonyszentlászló, at Vinye-Sándormajor, in the western side of the Cuha ravine. (N:47°360’ E:17°826’)

Kőrishegy doline: (Ördöglik) At the border of Bakonyszűcs, approx. 100 m below the top of the Kőris Hill, under the ‘marble cave’ on the south-eastern side. The blue cave sign of the National Blue Trail leads to the doline. (N:47°292’ E:17°758’)

Stone holes (Kőlikak) in Magos Hill: The stones holes are located at the edge of Dudar, at the foot of Magos Hill of Eocene limestone cliff, at the borderline of the main dolomite. The biggest one is the 22 m long hole called Csapóné konyája (Kitchen of Csapóné) at the south-western end of the cave system. (N:47°312’ E:17°942’)

Caves of Odvaskő: This cave system is one of the longest known caves. It is located at the outskirts of Bakonyszűcs, in one of the side passage of Gerence, on the northern edge of the Szarvad-ditch, in about 80 m relative height. It can be reached through the path marked with red sign. Odvaskő is not the name of the cave but of a single dolomite bastion, the top of which has a delightful view of the area. The 20 m long, 8-10 m wide and 3-4 m high chamber of Odvaskő cave deepens is in the western side of the cliff. (N: 47° 288’ E: 17° 715')

Caves of the Devil’s Ditch: There are several cave ruins in both sides od the romantic Devil’s Ditch of Bakonyoszlop. Like other smaller caves of the area (Csesznek, Dudar), most of them developed along the borderline of the main dolomite emerging from the Eocene limestone. The complete list of them is in the guide book ‘Csesznek and Zirc’ of 19557. Among these caves there is the Devil’s Hole rock cavern (Kisbarlang, Small cave). It is located at the edge of Bakonyoszlop, in the western side of the middle part of the Devil’s Hole, 12.4 m above the bed. It is a 7.5 m long hole deepening into a main dolomite and has a rising bottom. (N: 47° 339’ E: 17° 916')

Remetelyuk (Hermit Hole): It is located at the edge of Bakonyszentlászló, in the northern side of Cuha’s final valley. The 7 m long hole with has developed in a main dolomite. Its chamber with a rising bottom expands into a room. On its ceiling, the hole has two vents resulting from a cave-in. Climbing out the right vent, we can enjoy a beautiful view. (N:47°269’ E:17°992’)

Cave of Somhegy: (Nagy Pénzlik.) It is located at the border of Bakonybél, on the south-eastern slope of Somhegy, about 800 metres above sea level. From the lookout tower, a red cave sign leads to the cave. Due to its high position and sack-like shape, the cave collects the cold of winter. This leads to the formation of spectacular icicles and columns in the spring. (N: 47°250’ E: 17°779’)

Somhegy doline: (Kis Pénzlik.) At the border of Bakonybél, near the cave of Somogyhegy, along the red cave sign, approx. 607 metres above sea level. (N: 47°252’ E: 17°760’)

Cave of Sűrűhegy: (Éva-cave, Big cave, Devil’s hole, second cave of Sűrűhegy, several authors mistakenly call it Magoshegy cave.) It is located at the border of Dudar, in the eastern steep slope of the Devil’s Ditch, near the edge, in a relative height of 45 m and 370.1 metres above sea level. (N: 47°322’ E: 17°905’)

Cave of Szárazgerence: (Betyár-cave, Pörgölhegyi-cave) It is located at the border of Bakonyszűcs, on the edge of the western steep slope of Szárazgerence. The yellow cave sign of the yellow trail in the valley is leading to the cave, but we also can find it along the debris cone from the excavations. One of the largest, former caves with stream of the caves of Bakony may be hidden behind the passages still blocked by filling (N: 47°262’ E: 17°748’)

Cave of Tiloserdő: On the border of Lókút, at the eastern side of the trench leading to the Tiloserdő. (N: 47°205’ E: 17°811’)

Rocky cave of Tönkölös: (Likaskő.) It is a smaller dolomite cavern at the border of Bakonybél, in the southern slope of the Tönkölös Hill. (N: 47°352’ E: 17°800’)

Zsivány cave: It is a spacious but shallow stone chamber at the border of Bakonyszentlászló in the main dolomite, south-west from the Remetelyuk, on the other side of the Cuha canyon, in a height of 20 m. (N: 47°378’E: 17°834’)
