HIGH BAKONY LANDSCAPE PROTECTION AREA

GPS coordinates: N: 47.259845, E: 17.737525

The High Bakony Landscape Protection Area was established in 1991. It contains the Kőris Hill and its wider area with Bakonybél as centre. It covers an area of 8754 hectares, 478 from it is specially protected. In addition to the its most romantic part and biodiversity, the Landscape Protection Area is very valuable due to its geological diversity. Rocky ravines (Gerence, Kerteskői, Száraz-Gerence, Tisztavíz-valley), deep, steep valleys (Bécsi ditch, Márvány ditch, Szarvad ditch, Vörös János Séd), several caves, including the Odvaskő cave whic was already mentioned in the Establishing Charter of Tihany. It is characterised by numerous other karst formations (limestone pavement, sinkhole, ponor, dolina) and a variety of lithological structures

70% of its forests consist of middle-mountain hornbeam and beech forests where the main tree species are combined with European ash, sycamore, Norway maple, large- and small-leaved lime and wild cherry. In the beech forests of the highest parts, we find wych elm, sycamore and European ash. Their most beautiful trees can be found on Kőris Hill, Blue Hill and Parajos. The peculiar and rare nesting birds of this forest type are the white-backed woodpecker. The rare black stork and the more common raven are also nesting in this undisturbed beech forest. Spurge laurel is the evergreen shrub of the forests. We can see perennial honesty, hart’s-tongue and chervil in the rocky, deep valleys, ash and linden rock forest on the rocky sides and alder in the stream valleys. In the treeless, rocky southern glades of Nagy Som Hill, there are rustybacks and elder-flowered orchids. In the clear water of the Vörös János Séd (in Bakony only here) we can find stone crayfish and in the cool beech groves Alpine longhorn beetle and Alpine newt. On the northern side of the ridges, we find the most interesting forest association of the Bakony Mountains: the mixed karst forest with several rare plants in the herb layer. The Hungarian brown-grass grows in an area of some square metres in the smoke tree and downy oak (which is very rare in this height) forest of the Odvaskőhát. This is the only place in Hungary where it is found.
